Give Yourself a Compliment: The Power of Positive Self-Talk

By: Keely Hamilton, Senior Content Creator, and Avery Hall, Lead Intern

There’s no denying that compliments make us feel good, whether we give them or receive them. Compliments help form the foundation of our relationships with friends and family because they allow us to express our appreciation for others. It’s no secret that compliments boost our moods, make us feel more confident, and give us numerous reasons to smile.

Did you know researchers have found that giving yourself compliments is just as beneficial as receiving them? Playing sports is just as much of a mental game as they are a physical one. Practicing positive self-talk is the first step to leveling up your competitive game and achieving your athletic goals.

What many of us don’t realize is that compliments go beyond physical appearance. Compliments help us identify traits we like in those around us and give ourselves credit for things we’re doing well in our life. Because there can be so much weight behind the words we say to others, it’s important to recognize that internal validation is just as if not more important to practice.

Similar to “power phrases,” a good compliment should use strong verbiage and action words to highlight your accomplishments. Need some inspiration? Check out some of our favorite compliments from our Lead alumni, and give them a try the next time you need a confidence boost:
